Since its inception in 2002, the Equator Initiative has hosted and supported a large number of events in support of community work to achieve the MDGs. These events have explored the community role in protecting the environment and raising incomes and provide a highly substantive backdrop for the many additional advocacy and outreach events that the Equator Initiative organizes each year. Each event has been documented on its own webpage. We invite you to learn more about these special activities and about the critical role communities play in poverty reduction and biodiversity conservation.

 

Equator Prize Award Ceremony 2014

Winners websiteIn support of the UN Secretary General’s Climate Summit and the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples, UNDP and partners hosted the Equator Prize 2014 Award Ceremony at Lincoln Center on Monday, 22 September 2014. Attended by more than 2,400 people, the evening was a celebration of leadership by indigenous and local communities working to meet climate and development challenges through the conservation and sustainable use of nature. Community Dialogues, New York City

Lisa Nepal and NorbuOver 40 participants took part in community dialogues hosted at UNDP headquarters in New York City from September 18th through the 23rd. In conjunction with the 2014 Equator Prize Award Ceremony, this six-day event drew together leaders of local and indigenous organizations from 23 different countries. Participants enjoyed the opportunity to share best practices with one another as well as gain new skills during workshops led by Oxfam, UN-REDD, GEF and other guest speakers. Equator Prize for SLM in Sub-Saharan Africa Award Ceremony

5Z5B06772The Equator Prize for Sustainable Land Management in Sub-Saharan Africa award ceremony was held on 17 June 2014. Twenty-four representatives from twelve winning initiatives were celebrated for their remarkable achievements promoting best sustainable land management practices in dryland ecosystems in Sub-Saharan Africa. SLM Community Dialogues, Kenya

 

Day 1 Session 1Prior to the Equator Prize for Sustainable Land Management in Sub-Saharan Africa award ceremony, a series of community dialogues and capacity-building workshops were held with representatives of award-winning organizations. The SLM Dialogues, held from 13 to 15 June 2014, gave the participants the opportunity to present their work to one another, prepare community statements and elevator pitches, and discuss breakthrough strategies for sustianable land management and land restoration in the Sub-Saharan region. Click here to read more

Brown Bag Lunch with the Kenya Wildlife Service

ekiru1On Monday April 14 2014 the Equator Initiative hosted a presentation at UNDP headquarters by representatives of the Kenya Wildlife Service, the Kenya Tourism Board, and their local community partners. The presentation focused on the conservation and management of endangered wildlife in Kenya and the impacts of poaching on development in the region. Click here to read more
